Hair Loss - What are The Causes?
You cannot really talk about hair loss without actually understanding exactly how things work around the scalp. For instance, the adult scalp is known to contain about 100,000 hair follicles. However about 100 hairs are lost which tend to grow back in 5 weeks. But from the age of 40 and above, the prolactin of testosterone in men increase in level and what this does is to stimulate the production of an enzyme known as 5-Alpha Reductase that convert testosterone to DHT causing the head to grow back thinner or not even grow at all. This is the origin of hair loss problem as DHT shrinks the follicles which cause the hair to recede and over time.
Causes of Hair Loss
The first on the list of causes of hair loss is aging. Unfortunately, aging is a natural process that must come at some point but the effects can be controlled using healthy diets which will help to reduce the aging process to some extent. In terms of hair loss, aging increases the amount of DHT produced in our body but proper and healthy aging management ensures that it is reduced to the minimum and this postpones the hair loss to our scalps.
The hair follicles get weakened due to the deficiency of oxygen in the blood. When this happens, it leads to the dryness of scalp and cause hair loss. Less oxygen in your blood stream can be caused by cholesterol build up in the arteries as a result of taking in uncontrolled diet high in fat. Another thing that can cause this is cigarette smoking which tends to reduce the blood flow, increase the blood clotting activity of the cells and then damaging arteries. This would cause oxygen deficiency and weaken the hair follicles of which the end result is hair loss.
To maintain a health hair growth, minerals such as copper, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iodine are very necessary. Deficiency in mineral will reduce the chance to promote thyroid hormones which prevents dry hair and hair loss plus hair color defect. However, it is important to note that too much of iron in the body is toxic to the system, therefore, ensure you consult your doctor before taking any mineral supplement
Side Effect of Medication
Unfortunately some medications may contain elements that may aid hair loss such as warfarin, lithium and heparin. However, the good news in this regard is that when hair loss is cause by medications, it normally gets restored ones the medication is discontinued.
